彭真对子女的影响还表现在思想意识方面。最重要的一点，就是尊重劳动、尊重劳动人民。
彭真祖籍山东桓台，光绪年间大灾，祖父逃荒到了山西侯马。1902年10月12日，彭真诞生在山西省曲沃县垤上村的一个贫苦农民家庭里，取名傅懋恭。彭真多次对子女讲，由于生活所迫，他很小时就是全劳动力了。家里有点菜地，半夜就得起来干活。困了打个盹儿，他父亲一个耳刮子就打上来。正因为这样，他到17岁才有机会上了“高小”（即现在的小学四年级）。
彭真特别怀念他的祖母和母亲魏桂枝。那是两位极可敬的老人。彭真17岁才上“高小”，还是得力于他母亲和奶奶的全力支持。解放后，他多次接母亲到北京居住，可每次她都住不了多长时间就回去了。因为她住惯了窑洞，离不开劳动。
傅洋说：“在我们这种家庭生活，怎么也比普通群众家生活优越些。但是，我们绝不会看不起劳动，看不起劳动人民。我自己的奶奶就是一个见过大城市的豪华却又甘居于土窑洞，85岁临终仍在劳作的可敬老人，我们怎么可能忘本呢？”
彭真一生坐过两次监狱，这种特殊的经历也造就了他坚强不屈的特殊性格。
彭真在革命斗争中的坚定刚强是出了名的。在党内，关于他在国民党监狱里的斗争的故事也早有流传。
著名作家沙丁先生在《记贺龙》一书里，这样记载着抗战时期贺龙同志对彭真的评价：“他最佩服的是边区共产党负责人之一--彭真同志。‘这个人了不得！’他认真地说，‘对革命坚决的很。在华北的青年当中信仰蛮高呢！’他激赏地连连点头，于是上身倾折下去，捧着烟斗，吸起烟来。‘确实坚决！’他又忽然把腰身昂起来了，接着道，‘北平、天津几个地方的监牢，他都坐过。在监牢里领导过四次罢饭：第一次两天，第二次七天，第三次二十天！……’在说到二十天这几个字的时候，他的声调变得很激越，使人感觉他之所以顿住，只是因为他的音调不能够再高了，但又无法降低下去。因为他所提到的不是一个简简单单的数字，这中间包含着更加丰富、更加宝贵的东西。而十分显然，一个同志的英勇行动，使他变得骄傲而狂热了。他带着得意的微笑注视着我们。”
在国民党的监狱中，彭真患了肺结核，那在当时几近绝症。他凭着坚强的毅力和聂荣臻同志靠每月派地下党送进的两瓶鱼肝油，硬是挺了过来。1966年4月，在杭州政治局扩大会议上对彭真进行错误的批判时，聂荣臻还专门说了这件事，以证明老战友在狱中的坚定。
1960年，彭真率中共代表团赴布加勒斯参加罗马尼亚党代会。会上赫鲁晓夫发动突然袭击，大骂我们党。彭真拍案而起反击赫鲁晓夫。据吴冷西同志回忆说：“彭真同志逐个地批驳他（指赫鲁晓夫），他讲什么就批驳他什么。彭真同志这样你来我往地批驳赫鲁晓夫这个庞然大物，别的兄弟党代表只是瞪着眼睛听。”“彭真同志是我党书记处书记，赫鲁晓夫是苏共第一书记，从身份来讲是不对称的。但是，彭真同志就那么理直气壮地顶他、驳他，而且再三说，我还有好多话要讲，今天不讲。但你讲到哪里我就跟到哪里。他不断地重复这句话，从气势上压倒了赫鲁晓夫。”
